SOLERA ® is designed to deliver superior daylighted spaces and a range of thermal insulation. Our product lines are engineered to be highly configurable, allowing control of:

SOLERA ® is designed to fit into Standard Framing Systems including Curtain wall, Standard 90° Corner and flush glazing systems, which makes it ideal for new construction and renovations. SOLERA® is designed to be UV stable and has a warranty against color shift.

Light diffusing glazings are powerful elements for designers who wish to bring high quality natural light into interior spaces. Translucent glazings vary greatly in their ability to diffuse light, and selecting the right glazing can be critical to the success of a project. However there is no simple rating system that allows a designer to simply compare the performance of light diffusing glazings at a glance.

Full characterization of a translucent glazing results in a large multidimensional set of data that is too complicated for anything but an optics expert or a computer simulation program. On the other hand, simple numbers like ASTM’s ‘haze’ are not designed for this purpose and cannot differentiate between between common glazings with very different light diffusing abilities, such as Solera vs. acid etched glass.

Light Diffusing Power (LDP) is a new measurement and rating system that allows building designers to objectively compare light diffusing ability of various glazings. Below is a brief example to illustrate what it is, and a detailed explanation follows. The example below illustrates LDP and its impact on daylighting and light levels.

The glazing sample is illuminated by a quartz halogen spotlight, at an incidence of 45 degrees. A light meter measures the radiant intensity leaving the aperture in the mask that covers the back of the sample. The measurement is repeated over a range of angles from -85 to +85 and the results are recorded. (Measurements at exactly 90° not physically possible)

What is AEROGEL?

Studies show that comfort, productivity, learning, healing and customer consumption/retention are dramatically improved by the tactical use of natural light as the primary source of illumination in workplaces, schools, hospitals, homes, and retail environments.

Traditionally, this had resulted in a compromise, as the conventional materials used to transmit natural light have demonstrated an inability to insulate, while highly insulative materials have been unable to transmit meaningful quantities of daylight.

Current transparent daylight systems, while allowing maximum daylight, also bring problems such as glare, solar overheating, drafts, hot spots, and high contrast zones. Harnessing the exclusive properties of Lumira® aerogel for use in daylighting systems has changed all that with:

Aerogel resists the transfer of heat, making it a great insulator.


Aerogel is among the lightest and most effective insulating materials in the world. Cabot’s Lumira® brand aerogel, formerly Nanogel®, is a solid which consists largely of air (>90%) contained in a structure with pore sizes less than the mean free path of air molecules, which severely inhibits heat transfer through the material, enabling world-class performance.

Cabot produces Lumira® aerogel at its state of the art manufacturing facility located near Frankfurt, Germany where it began commercial production in 2003.
